Make Sure Your USB Drive Is Formatted for a Mac. Not all USB drives can be used with a Mac right out of the box. If your USB drive doesn't specifically state that it's Mac-compatible, you'll have to erase and format your drive for use with a Mac. If you want to use your USB stick with an Apple Mac, you will need to restart or power-on the Mac with the USB stick inserted while the Option/alt (⌥) key is pressed. This will launch Apple’s ‘Startup Manager’ which shows bootable devices connected to the machine.
